Inside JAŸ-Z’s Star-Studded ‘JAŸ-Z In 8’ Premiere In New York City

JAŸ-Z brought out some familiar faces in New York City on Sunday night for the world premiere of his upcoming HBO documentary series, JAŸ-Z in 8.

The rapper joined longtime friend Rick Rubin at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center on September 13, five days before the eight-part series makes its television debut. Rubin, who has collaborated with JAŸ-Z throughout his career, directed the project in his first documentary outing.

Several stars were on hand for the premiere, including SZA, Daniel Kaluuya and Leonardo DiCaprio. Questlove attended the screening, along with Fat Joe and Gunna. Slick Rick, Angie Martinez and DJ D-Nice were also among the guests. Following the red carpet, attendees watched a special screening before heading to an after-party at Lincoln Center Plaza.

JAŸ-Z In 8 pairs the Brooklyn rapper with Rubin for an extended conversation about his life and the thinking behind some of his best-known work. The series arrives 30 years after JAŸ-Z released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, giving him an opportunity to revisit the experiences behind a career spanning several decades.

His songwriting takes a prominent role in the series as he discusses how his personal life has informed his music. Songs featured throughout the eight episodes include “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Can I Live” and “Where I’m From.” Later records such as “4:44” and “The Story of O.J.” also appear.

The premiere comes as another of JAŸ-Z’s landmark albums reaches an anniversary. The Blueprint was released 25 years ago and currently sits atop Apple Music’s Hip-Hop/Rap Albums chart, introducing another generation of listeners to a project widely associated with a pivotal period in his career.

Rubin and JAŸ-Z both serve as executive producers alongside Kaluuya. Leila Mattimore and David Rohde are producers.

JAŸ-Z In 8 premieres September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO with its first two episodes airing back-to-back. Both will also be available on HBO Max. Two episodes will arrive each Friday through October 9.
