Angelina Jolie is fighting off fire and assassins in the trailer for Those Who Wish Me Dead. Jolie stars as Hannah Faber, a smokejumper and survival expert who crosses paths with a young child, played by Finn Little, on the run from two assassins. Little's character, Connor, has witnessed a murder and the two assassins (Nicholas Hoult and Aidan Gillen) are determined to flush him out of the Montana wilderness so they can get rid of any loose ends. What they didn't expect is for Connor to team up with Hannah and the film will follow the two as they navigate the burning forest after the assassins set the wilderness ablaze.
Those Who Wish Me Dead hails from Taylor Sheridan who wrote and directed the neo-western film. Sheridan is known for his gritty tales set in the modern American west. Before he began directing, Sheridan helped write Denis Villeneuve's Sicario and David Mackenzie's Hell or High Water before directing Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Sheridan nabbed a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards for Hell or High Water.
The trailer for Those Who Wish Me Dead, released by Warner Bros., continues the work he began with his other films, showing off the tense thriller in store. Jolie's Hannah Faber is swept up in a plot that she never expected to be a part of when she runs into a bloodied young Connor running from Patrick and Jack Blackwell. Jon Bernthal is also part of the cast, playing a police officer caught up in the battle between Hannah and the assassins.
Jolie hasn't been seen onscreen in a prominent role since 2019's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but Those Who Wish Me Dead seems to be a return the more grounded dramatics of a lot of her films. It will also be the first of two major films for the actress in 2021. Jolie is also slated to star in her MCU debut when Chloe Zhao's Eternals debuts in November. How prominent her role in that film is remains unclear as she's part of an expansive cast, but Those Who Wish Me Dead looks to be zeroing in on Jolie and the isolation of the Montana wilderness.
Those Who Wish Me Dead is one of the many films premiering in theaters and on HBO Max this year. Although one of the lower profile films of WB's slate, it could be a huge draw for the streamer both because of Jolie's star power and Sheridan's burgeoning reputation as the master of modern westerns. When Those Who Wish Me Dead hits the streamer it will be another big moment for Warner Bros. to prove their decision to release their 2021 films on the streamer was a good one.
