Falana: National industrial court doesn’t have jurisdiction to rule on FG/ASUU case

(The Cable)  Femi Falana, human rights lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the national industrial court does not have jurisdiction to rule on the case between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities  (ASUU). After seven months of strike by the union to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues, the federal government went to court to challenge the action. On Wednesday, Polycarp Hamman, the judge in the NIC, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction  to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike. Reacting to this development on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Friday, Falana said this is the first time a case of such nature would be brought before the industrial court. I am very worried about a global recession – Tony Elumelu

(Nairametrics.com)  The Chairman of Heirs Oil and Gas  (HHOG) Limited and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Mr Tony Elumelu has said that he is “very worried” about a global recession .  The Founder of  Tony Elumelu Foundation  (TEF)    disclosed this during an interview on CNN with Richard Quest. While consecutive interest rate hikes have helped control inflation, a recent report by the World Bank showed that such a series of rate hikes could push the world into a recession in 2023, largely because of the degree of synchronicity not seen over the past five decades.   Hence, it is expected that as    developed economies maintain high rates emerging markets like Nigeria will feel the negative impact on their economies.     Tony Elumelu signed a youth entrepreneurship deal with the UN, which is expected to provide access to capital on the continent.     When asked if he was concerned about a worldwide recession, he responded,  “I am very worried, but the glass is half full.

Biden is 13th and final US president to meet Queen Elizabeth

(The Independent)  With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Joe Biden gained the distinction of being the 13th and final U.S. president to meet the woman whose reign spanned seven decades. Every living former U.S. president — Jimmy Carter , Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump — joined Biden in mourning her passing and sending condolences to her family. EU countries seek emergency solution to soaring energy bills

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union countries' energy ministers meet on Friday to search for solutions from a long list of possible measures to shield citizens from sky-high energy prices as winter approaches. The basis for the talks is a set of proposals made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - among them, a price cap on Russian gas, a windfall levy on non-gas power plants, a bloc-wide cut in electricity demand, and emergency credit lines for power firms facing soaring collateral requirements. EU diplomats said countries appeared broadly supportive of measures to provide liquidity for companies, and some had also backed curbing power demand. Other proposals were more divisive. The price cap on Russian gas has so far failed to win support among a majority of countries, with some questioning how it would help curb prices given the low gas volumes Moscow is now sending to Europe. "Our intention first and foremost is to bring prices down. A cap on

Raheem Sterling saves Chelsea against Leicester

(ESPN)  Raheem Sterling scored his first goals for Chelsea since his £47.5 million summer move from Manchester City, netting both in a 2-1 win against Leicester at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea's win, following last week's 3-0 loss against Leeds at Elland Road, was earned the hard way, with midfielder Conor Gallagher being sent off on 28 minutes for two yellow cards, forcing the home side to play with 10 men for more than an hour. But although Leicester had chances to emerge with at least a point, Sterling made the difference for Thomas Tuchel's side. The England international eased the home side's nerves by opening the scoring with a 20-yard strike on 46 minutes. Sterling then doubled Chelsea's lead on 60 minutes with a far post tap-in from Reece James'  cross. Harvey Barnes pulled one back for Leicester three minutes later, and Ayoze Perez  hit the crossbar in the final moments as the Foxes chased an equaliser, but Sterling's double was enough to se

Biden signs NATO membership protocols for Finland and Sweden

President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed NATO accession protocols for Finland and Sweden, moving the defense alliance closer to adding two wealthy, militarily advanced members amid Russia’s ongoing assault on Ukraine. Biden’s approval followed overwhelming support from both chambers of Congress earlier this summer, with the Senate ratifying the agreement last week. Efforts to welcome the two Nordic countries to the treaty have received bipartisan support, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell last week calling their admission a “slam dunk” for national security. Finland and Sweden have skirted military alliances in the past, but quickly moved to apply for NATO membership in May, a few months after Russian forces invaded Ukraine. NATO ambassadors ratified the accession protocols in July, and member states are currently in the process of doing the same. “Together with our allies and partners, we’re going to write the future we want to see, and in a moment when

China announces fresh military drills around Taiwan

TAIPEI, Aug 8 (Reuters) - China's military announced fresh military drills on Monday in the seas and airspace around Taiwan - a day after the scheduled end of its largest ever exercises to protest against last week's visit to Taipei by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China's Eastern Theatre Command said it would conduct joint drills focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations - confirming the fears of some security analysts and diplomats that Beijing would continue to maintain pressure on Taiwan's defences. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan last week infuriated China, which regards the self-ruled island as its own and responded with test launches of ballistic missiles over Taipei for the first time, as well as ditching some lines of dialogue with Washington. The duration and precise location of the latest drills is not yet known, but Taiwan has already eased flight restrictions near the six earlier Chinese exercise areas surrounding the island. Shortly
